Giving Challenge Message from the Mural Society Board of Directors –
The Mural Society began the year by celebrating our 25th anniversary, hosting sold-out walking tours and well-attended history classes. Unfortunately we had to suspend our history classes and cancel the last four walking tours of the season due to the pandemic.
Our artist started our 30th mural at the new Library in February and fortunately he has been able to continue painting as folks keep a social distance from the mural wall. We’re hoping to have it completed and be able to dedicate it once things are back to normal.
We also began our next mural project, the Historic Punta Gorda Army Airfield, in February, getting approval from City Council and planning our fundraising. This mural was originally painted at the airport in 2002 but was lost 16 years ago during Hurricane Charley. We are excited to finally have a new home for it in Veterans Park.

Our major fundraiser for this project was to be the 2020 Giving Challenge scheduled for the end of this month (April 28-29). We have been fortunate to participate in the last five Challenges and thank everyone who supported us. While we had been looking forward to another successful Giving Challenge to raise significant funds for this new mural, sadly, things have drastically changed.
The Mural Society Board of Directors feels that this is a critical time for the people in our community. If you decide to donate during the Giving Challenge, we encourage you to look first for those charities that help them. Our historic murals are wonderful, help educate our community and make our town unique. We love them and we love our local history, but without people, in good health and prosperity, to enjoy them, the murals are only paint on a wall.
If you can donate beyond the current crisis and if you are moved to donate to the Mural Society during the Giving Challenge, we would be very, very grateful.
Perhaps in years to come this pandemic and how it impacted us and our town will be documented. We are all participating in this historic event and will have important knowledge and personal experiences to share in the future. Educating future generations on our past is critically important. Our commitment to capture our history and educate our community is still strong. And we are looking forward to the next 25 years.
We hope all of you stay healthy and safe.  We are all in this together and together we will get through it.
The Mural Society Board of Directors
